Shuya UsuiVA: Yuuya Uchida

First of all, what are your thoughts now that recording has wrapped up?
My thoughts? Well, "wait, it's over?!" was my first thought.
I just wish I could have stayed a bar master for just another while longer.
Can you tell us about your impressions of the script when you first read it, and if your impression changed at all after playing the role?
When I first heard that the role would be a bar owner, I thought, "Yes!" (Laughs)
I think guys like the idea of being a bartender, so I was excited. The fact that I was a bartender also meant I realized I might get involved with everyone's stories. I thought he'd be a key player, and that would be fun! (Laughs) After playing him, I realized that this bar master is just a man like anyone else. (Laughs) He has plenty of his own insecurities. He really is just a normal guy!
What do you think is the primary appeal of your character, and what were you conscious of while recording them?
Well, if you compare him to some of the other characters, I think his appeal is that he's an "adult." (Laughs) So I tried to give him a feeling of open-mindedness, of being a little loose. I wanted those things to come out when I was voicing him. In terms of things I was careful about, there were many scenes that took place inside the bar. We were recording in a sound studio, and the lights were very bright, but I tried to imagine a bar with dim lighting and have that come out in my voice. Beyond the mic, I always see many female staff waiting. So I would often act as if I'd be hitting on them. (Laughs)
Can you tell us about a scene that you particularly enjoyed or one that stood out to you?
I appreciate how this game strikes a balance between predictability and surprises.
In a romance game, when one mentions a "bartender," many might have a preset notion of that character. However, this game seems to deviate from such typical expectations. Regarding other characters, I can mostly speak for the part I played. My character is one of the more grounded ones. He's fairly settled and mature, so he doesn't have to go through many big character shifts. But he still undergoes some development, so if even Usui goes through that, I have to imagine that the other character's images will get flipped upside down. That's what I mean when I say this game has both surprises and predictability. I think a major charm of it is that as you play, you'll be pulled in unexpected directions.
The story of this game revolves around an "information app." Can you tell us about some of the apps you often use, or an app you wish existed?
An app I use? Well, there's a social app I voiced that I often play. I'm pretty hooked on it. (Laughs)
After that, I would say my navigation app. I have to get to a lot of studios, after all. I rely way too much on my navigation app. Whenever I get to the studio they always ask, "How did you get here?" and I never know how to respond. (Laughs)

Also, there's an app that I've wanted for a very long time!
There are times when recording ends up taking less time than we initially thought it would, right? I might have something else to record that day, but have a lot of time before the next recording at a different studio. So in between jobs, I'll search for how to get to the next studio, and whenever I do, it shows me the shortest route. But I always think, "I don't want the shortest route." So I'd love a navigation map that offered detours. You'd input the time you want to arrive, and it would offer you scenic routes with famous places, but still ensure you arrive at your destination on time. For example, I love sweets, so it could recommend famous confectionary stores along the way! (Laughs) Maybe if it had built-in AI, it could learn more and more about the things you like! But sometimes I'd want it to totally mix things up... It would have to take my mood into account when recommending things. For example, I normally like mille-feuille, but some days nothing beats a pudding! (Laughs) So an app that offered detours like that would be great. At the end of the day, my navigation app will always show me the fastest route, so I take it and kill time at a café. It's a constant repeat of that. In those weird times where I still have 30 minutes to kill, I wish it would recommend stopping at parks that have a lot of pretty flowers or something along those lines. I think a route that offered you detours would be great. That might be kind of difficult, but I'd prefer something that wouldn't give me the fastest route.
Are there any characters in the game that you relate to?
I think it's got to be Usui. The last thing we recorded was the profile voice section. At that time, I thought, "Man, we really have a lot in common." I wondered things like, "Wait, is this my profile?" (Laughs) I was shocked as soon as I saw the script. So I'd have to say Usui, for sure. On the other hand, there were some aspects I didn't relate to.
The game features various occupations: app developers, heirs to big companies, freeloaders, bartenders. Would you like to try any of them in particular?
I'd pick office worker, for sure. It's not that I want to be an office worker, but more that I want to know what it's like to work for a company full time. I've never worked for a company before. I don't really know what it means to get paid on a regular schedule, work regular hours, work on holidays, or conversely, have paid vacation. This job doesn't really offer paid holidays. I think it must be great to be part of a company. I'd like to try it, and I regret that I've never known what it feels like. In my line of work, the more we do, the more we get paid. But in a company, the salary is the same whether you work hard or not. So what does that feel like? I want to know what it's like to work hard, accomplish a lot, but still get paid the same. Also, I'm really interested in production work!
Finally, do you have a message for the fans?
I'm sure you all are looking forward to the release!
One of my lines in the game was "Please hurry to Evergreen," but it's okay with me if you don't rush. (Laughs) You don't have to hurry, just please make sure you visit Evergreen at some point. And if possible, I hope you'll stay at Evergreen forever. (Laughs)
