One of the game's unique mechanics is the sanity gauge.
Displayed alongside a heartbeat monitor at the top of the screen, sanity starts at 100% when entering a dungeon, but gradually declines with each step. Some traps can also lower sanity.
As it decreases, Sayaka begins succumbing to madness, and her field of view narrows. This makes it harder to see enemies, so be careful.

The mini-map's range becomes limited as sanity drops, too.
Previously discovered traps, items, stairs, and enemies will vanish from the map. As you lose your grip on important information, low sanity will bring you closer to death!
Self-Harm
If sanity falls below 20%, Sayaka may inflict self-harm on herself.
The lower your sanity, the more likely this is to happen, and it can even result in death!
Recovering Sanity
Use the special item Ether Code to recover sanity. Deciding when and how to use your limited supply of recovery items is key to staying sane.
