Battle Mechanics

The frenetic side-scrolling battle of the original gets shifted to an over-the-shoulder view.
Advance by destroying all of the enemies within the area.
A boss battle awaits you at the end of the stage. Defeating the boss will complete the stage, and you can see the results afterwards.
Bring on the Kansen bosses!
Players can't select the same character appearing as a boss, so scouting as many characters as possible will make it easier to face them.

If you're up to the challenge, you can actually clear the game without scouting a single Kansen, but be wary that it will be quite difficult to do so.

The movement speed varies between characters.

Use the right stick to control them at the same time.
The circle you see on the middle of the screen is the lock-on area, and enemies within this area are easier to hit.
You can press up or down on the directional buttons to zoom in and zoom out. You can use them to see your character close up!
(Of course, this makes it harder to avoid enemy attacks)

You can dash as many times as needed. The ability even comes with some invincibility frames.

Characters classified as battleships will guard instead of dashing when the O button is pressed. Hold the O button to keep your guards up, which will reduce oncoming damage.
Note that you can nullify damage by guarding just before the attack hits.

Attack using Armament 1 with the R1 button, and attack using Armament 2 with the R2 button. The weapon's power and firing arc depends on the equipped armament that can be verified on the character's status screen.
Some attacks can't be used until a specific gauge is filled, which would need to be recharged to be used again.

Some characters are able to use torpedoes for Armament 2.
They're slow to fire, but can deal massive damage. The key to a quick victory relies on your ability to land a torpedo successfully.

Aircraft carrier-class characters are able to use planes in battle. Once deployed, the aircraft will automatically join the battle. There are 3 types of aircraft and they can be changed at any time from the preparation screen.
Fighters:
Deploy automatically. Attacks only enemy aircrafts.
Bombers:
Manual deployment. Very powerful, but weak against anti-air attacks.
Attackers:
Manual deployment. Well-balanced aircraft.

Press the □ button when your character's skill gauge is at max to activate their skill. The skill each character has can't be changed, but they can be strengthened using items. Note that some skills will automatically activate.

The closer you are to the enemy, the greater the damage you can deal. Beware as it also applies vice versa.

You can automatically fire shots against aircrafts if you have anti-air weaponry equipped. Of course, you can use your normal attacks to shoot them down, but if your anti-air weapon is powerful enough, it will take care of them on its own.

You can use a lock-on attack when the lock-on gauge is at max.
You can target all enemies within the lock-on range by pressing down on the ○ button, and attack all those locked-on at the same time by releasing the button.

Press left or right on the directional buttons to control another character in the main fleet. You can switch as frequently as you need.

Some enemies may drop Recovery Cubes when defeated.
They will heal all of your allies in your fleet by a certain amount.

You can restart the battle from the beginning, or return to the Ocean Map from here. You can also use this screen to simply enjoy a little peek at your characters.

Aircraft
They fly through the air and attack from above.
They may drop Recovery Cubes when destroyed.
Mass-Produced Vessels
They attack using torpedoes and their turrets.
Some may drop item containers when defeated.
Exploding Boats
Once they appear, they will head straight towards you in an effort to self-destruct.
You are guaranteed a Recovery Cube if you can defeat them before they explode.
Destroying any of these enemies will help fill your character's gauges.
